Arsenal got back to winning ways in the Premier League with an impressive 3-0 win over Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium this evening.
A week after the disappointing defeat away at Fulham, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger would have been hoping for a response from his players and that is exactly what he got. A brace from Robin van Persie and another from Denilson secured the points for the Gunners.
Arsenal should have taken the lead in the first five minutes when first they looked to be denied a clear penalty after Van Persie was brought down in the box by Fabio Coloccini. William Gallas then somehow managed to sidefoot the ball over the bar from a couple of yards of the Newcastle goal.
The Gunners did however get a penalty a few minutes later when Charles N'Zogbia was penalised for holding back Emmanuel Adebayor. Dutchman Van Perise stepped up to smash the ball home.
Michael Owen had the best chance for the Magpies in the first-half, but his team-mate Shola Ameobi got in the way in the England man was poised to score and Owen steered the ball wide.
Arsenal doubled their advantage after 41 minutes when Van Persie slotted in his second after a clever back-heel from Emmanuel Eboue.
Both teams played adventurous football in the second-half and though Nicky Butt hit the bar for Newcastle, it was Arsenal who were more clinical. A typical Arsenal passing move between Samir Nasri, Adebayor and Denilson ended with the Brazilian curling the ball past Shay Given.
Van Persie came agonisingly close to grabbing a hat-trick but saw his effort come back off the inside of the bar.
