A British soldier has died at Birmingham's Selly Oak hospital from wounds he sustained in an explosion in Afghanistan three weeks ago.
The unnamed soldier, from the First Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment and whose next of kin have been informed, died yesterday, the Ministry of Defence said.
He sustained the fatal wounds in an explosion during a routine patrol in Musa Qala, Helmand province, on February 21st. The MoD said his death was not connected with the Nato coalition offensive Operation Moshtarak.
"It is with sadness I must inform you that one of our comrades succumbed to his wounds last night in Selly Oak Hospital," said Lieutenant Colonel David Wakfield, spokesman for Taskforce Helmand.
"It happened while he was on a patrol to the north of Musa Qala district centre, part of the ongoing successful operations in the Musa Qala area to drive the insurgents away from the local people and away from the district centre. He was one of us, one of our own, who fell doing his duty; we will remember him."
The UK death-toll from operations in Afghanistan now stands at 273.
