Everton remain unbeaten in the Premiership after an entertaining 1-1 draw with Newcastle which saw both sides reduced to ten men at St James' Park.
Shola Ameobi gave the Magpies the lead in the first half with a highly controversial goal with Tim Cahill equalising just before half-time.
Referee Steve Bennett then brandished two red cards in the space of five minutes with Everton's Tony Hibbert and Newcastle defender Titus Bramble given their marching orders.
Newcastle, missing Damien Duff due to a thigh injury, dominated the first half and wasted several scoring chances.
First Charles N' Zogbia rifled his shot over the bar from close range following a corner.
Then Shola Ameobi put his header wide on 10 minutes after being un-marked inside the box.
But Ameobi redeemed himself four minutes later with a goal that left Everton boss David Moyes furious with the assistant referee.
The striker slotted home from six yards following Emre's free-kick with television replays showing Ameobi was yards off-side.
Magpies skipper Scott Parker came close to extending their lead on 26 minutes when his chip was tipped over by goalkeeper Tim Howard.
Everton then missed two gilt-edged chances in the space of two minutes in search of an equaliser.
First Joleon Lescott put a free header wide from Mikel Arteta's cross after slack marking from Titus Bramble.
Then Lee Carsley fired his diving header narrowly wide on 34 minutes from Phil Neville's sublime cross.
Five minutes later Everton equalised when Cahill powered his header past Steve Harper from an Arteta cross on 41 minutes.
The second half began frantically with Parker denied a penalty on 47 minutes after beating two players and falling in the box.
Newcastle's £10 million signing Obafemi Martins looked off the pace and wasted two chances when sent through on goal.
Bramble capped off a woeful display on 73 minutes after receiving a second yellow for clattering into Leon Osman from behind.
Five minutes Hibbert committed a similar foul from behind and Bennett was left with little choice to reduce Everton to ten men.
Everton could have snatched victory at the death after Osman was sent through on goal but his shot was comfortably saved by Harper.
The result sees Everton remain in fourth place on 12 points while Newcastle move up to 12th.
