Two British soldiers have been killed in an incident in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed.
Both soldiers were killed in action in the Sangeen Valley, Helmand Province, an MoD spokesman said.
He added that the soldiers' next of kin are currently being informed and that no further details will be released until they have been contacted.
Another soldier was also wounded after the patrol came under fire, but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
"It is with great sadness that I must confirm the deaths of two of our brave soldiers in Afghanistan," Defence secretary Des Browne said.
"My deepest sympathies are with their families and loved ones."
The latest deaths come less than two weeks after the death of Captain Jim Philippson, who was killed following a firefight with Taliban forces in the same province.
Two other soldiers were seriously injured in the incident, which occurred on the evening of Sunday June 11th.
Following that incident, Mr Browne spoke of the "difficult task" British troops were facing in attempting to "ensure Afghanistan remains secure".
The southern region of Afghanistan is notoriously lawless and remains a stronghold of the Taliban.
