Two British soldiers have been killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.
The soldiers, from 1st Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment, part of the Household Cavalry Regiment Battle Group, died in Helmand province on Tuesday afternoon.
Their deaths take the total number of British service personnel killed in Afghanistan since 2001 to 275.
Paying tribute to the two soldiers killed yesterday, Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: "Their determined courage in the face of the danger from improvised explosive devices and the sacrifice they have made will not be forgotten."
The MoD confirmed the soldiers' next of kin had been informed and said they had not been taking part in Nato's massive offensive in the south of Afghanistan, codenamed Operation Moshtarak.
Yesterday it was announced another British soldier had died at Birmingham's Selly Oak hospital from wounds he sustained in an explosion in Afghanistan three weeks ago.
