The Godfather has been voted the best film ever made after a poll of moviemakers, film critics and magazine readers.

The 1972 mafia picture, an adaptation of Mario Puzo's novel, topped Empire magazine's list of the 500 best films ever, after a vote from cinema journalists, more than 10,000 Empire readers and filmmakers including Quentin Tarantino, Sam Mendes and Edgar Wright.

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark came in second with The Empire Strikes Back in third and perennial Empire favourite The Shawshank Redemption in fourth.

Shawshank was actually placed highest among Empire readers but dropped to fourth position after critics' and filmmakers' votes had been counted.

Tarantino's own Pulp Fiction grabbed ninth position while 1999's Fight Club was the most modern movie to make the top ten.

The Dark Knight has another accolade to add to its box office success and positive critical response, as the only 21st century film to make the top 20.

Some 5.4 per cent of readers voted the Batman Begins sequel their favourite film ever, with 29 per cent placing the Christopher Nolan movie in their all time top ten.

Casino Royale while the highest-place James Bond film, in 56th, while all three instalments of The Lord of the Rings trilogy made the top 60.

The Empire top 500 can be seen in the new issue of the film magazine, released on September 24th.

The top ten films according to Empire's poll are:

1 The Godfather (1972)
2 Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981)
3 Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
4 The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
