Romanian side FC Cluj produced the performance of the night to win their first ever Champions League game 2-1 away to Italian giants AS Roma.
Cluj who hail from Transylvania went a goal down in the Olympic Stadium, but produced an unbelievable comeback with two goals from Argentine striker Juan Emanuel Culio which secured them one of the most famous victories in the history of the Champions League.
Barcelona got off to a flying start with a 3-1 home victory over Sporting Lisbon. Goals from Rafael Marquez and Samuel Eto'o gave the Catalan giants a 2-0 lead, but Antonio Leonel Tonel pulled one back for Sporting with a powerful free-kick.
The home side endured some nervy moments before Uefa's Player of Euro 2008 Xavi made the game safe in the dying minutes.
Jose Mourinho saw his Inter Milan side record an impressive 2-0 away win against Panathinaikos. Brazilian winger Alessandro Mancini opened the scoring while his compatriot Adriano secured the points with Inter's second.
In Liverpool's group, Atletico Madrid recorded a hugely-impressive 3-0 win away at PSV Eindhoven. Sergio Aguero scored twice and Maniche got the third as Atletico sent out a warning sign to the rest of the group.
Elsewhere, Shakhtar Donetsk won 2-1 away as Basle while Werder Bremen and Cypriot debutants Anorthosis Famagusta played out a scoreless draw.
