Tests have been carried out to determine how poisonous gas would spread through London's underground system.

The trial was held at St John's Wood station, on the Jubilee Line. Services on this section of the network will operate as normal.

Sulphur hexafluoride, a harmless chemical, was released into the station and levels of penetration and airflow were then measured.

Ministry of Defence scientists will assess the results of the experiment before further tests are carried out at the same station next Sunday.

Announcing the experiments earlier this month, transport secretary Douglas Alexander stressed that they were not in reaction to any increased threat to the underground system.

The trials are the latest initiative being pursued by the government to monitor security on the tube network, following tests of passenger screening technology at Paddington station last year.

Experiments have also been carried out at Canary Wharf and Greenford tube stations.
