Strikes on the London Underground announced

Tube staff to strike
Rail union RMT has announced a three-day strike on the London Underground from 18:30 GMT on April 6th to April 9th.

Union members voted yesterday by a margin of five to one for strike action in a dispute over staffing levels. Members of fellow Tube union TSSA also voted for action earlier this month.

RMT general secretary Bob Crow said: "This vote reveals the strength of feeling among our members that the safety and security of the network, for staff and passengers alike, will not be compromised under any conditions."

The unions believe that staff cuts and subcontracting jobs to agencies is putting workers at risk.

RMT and TSSL are demanding the London Underground drop plans to close ticket offices and introduce mobile supervisors who would look after several stations.

The unions also say staffing the new Terminal 5 station with staff subcontracted from other firms but wearing London Underground uniforms has "serious safety implications".

Transport for London said the issues have nothing to do with safety and are being addressed through the normal negotiating process.End of story
