Stretch of M6 closed in both directions after crash involving several vehicles
A stretch of the M6 has been closed for the foreseeable future after a crash involving a number of vehicles on Saturday morning.

An accident occurred just after 10:00 GMT between junctions 16 and 17 just south of Sandbach and the road was at first closed in both directions, though the northbound carriageway has since reopened.

Air ambulance teams and accident investigators are attending the scene at which there are a number of casualties, though there as yet no reports of any fatalities.

A statement from Cheshire police confirmed there was "a collision between several vehicles on the southbound carriageway just south of Sandbach".

"As a result of this, one of the vehicles has gone onto the northbound carriageway where a further collision has taken place," a spokesperson said.

"There are multiple casualties as a result of the collision however at this stage but none of those are reported as fatalities but the severity of those casualties is still being assessed.

The spokesperson added that the accident investigators were en route to the incident.

Police warned motorists to expect severe delays in the area with traffic likely to be backed up.

It is advised that drivers avoid the M6 where possible and seek alternative routes.End of story
