Severe traffic problems expected as Easter break begins

Severe delays are expected over the coming days
Severe problems are expected on most forms of transport as people begin their Easter holidays today.

Poor weather and considerable engineering work nationwide are predicted to produce awful conditions for Easter travellers during the traditional bank holiday weekend.

More than 16 million cars are expected to hit Britain's roads over the next four days and planned works may cause considerable traffic jams.

Roadworks are taking place on a vast number of the nation's roads including the M1, M4, M5, M6, M11, M25 and many smaller A roads.

Meanwhile, the Association of Train Operating Companies claims that around three million people will take the train today to begin their Easter break.

And with more than 30 engineering projects planned to be carried out over the Easter holiday, severe delays are being predicted.

Some 6,000 people will be working on the country's railways this weekend, laying new track, repairing bridges and updating signalling systems.

The poor weather forecast, expected to be on the coldest ever with snow predicted to hit some parts of the country, is only adding to the dismal outlook for travel in the coming days.

The RAC has warned people, if the weather turns bad, only to travel if it is necessary.
