Police are appealing for witnesses
A passer-by has been shot during an armed robbery at Rayleigh railway station in Essex.
At about 07:15 BST this morning two armed robbers threatened a security guard in Station Road and fired shots from a gun which hit the unnamed passer-by, British Transport Police (BTP) said.
The victim, said to be his 20s, was taken to a local hospital and has undergone surgery. He is said to be in a serious but stable position.
The armed robbers made off with scarves wrapped around their faces and drove away in a white Escort van.
"Anyone who witnessed the robbery or persons acting suspiciously in the area, or saw an Escort being abandoned and two men driving off at speed should contact BTP or Crimestoppers," a statement read.
