Lifestyle choices are 'key' to environmental changes

Lifestyle changes 'necessary' to protect future of the environment, church claims
Only through significant lifestyle changes can the future of the environment be safeguarded, a new report by the Church of Scotland claims.

A new white paper from the Church and Society Council is to call for the UK population to attempt to help the move towards alternative forms of energy and transportation by acknowledging the impact of their own commuting patterns, holidays, food consumption and leisure activities.

And Energy and Transport - Moving Forward paper, to be presented at the church's general assembly later this month, calls on the government to promote the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through lifestyle changes and recommends a steadfast commitment to an improved public transport network.

"There is a fundamental tension between the legitimate use of transport and the damage that it causes," the report states.

"There is no simple - or quick - technological fix to replace liquid petroleum and diesel; our primary response must be based around our lifestyles as this is the most effective place where we can make a difference."

It claims that other than in the field of aviation, "significant reductions in transport emissions" are possible if the public accepts new plans and pursues fuel-efficient motoring.

"The energy aspects of transport are critical factors in both our economy and in addressing the dangerous aspects of climate change," the report authors add.

"Technology and public policy have a strong role to play in bringing about change, but the key dimension is that of lifestyle choice and public expectations."End of story
