Fresh severe weather warnings issued for Monday onwards

Flood warnings remain in place in western UK as more heavy rainfall predicted
Forecasters are warning residents in the west of England and Wales to expect more heavy rain over the coming days.

The Met Office says up to 50mm of rainfall is also predicted across northern England, Northern Ireland and the south of Scotland.

"Localised flooding is likely where ground is already saturated and there could be disruption to transport networks," a statement said.

The forecasts of "persistent and locally heavy rain" have raised fears of flooding in areas on high alert since the new year.

The Environment Agency had issued 48 flood warnings on Sunday night, with most falling within Gloucestershire.

Rain has continued to fall across most western parts of the country over the weekend, confirming fears that water tables – the level of dampness in the soil – would remain well above average going into the working week.

Many of the properties most at risk following near-continuous rainfall in 2008 were heavily flooded during last summer.

More than 4,000 homes and 500 businesses were hit by the summer flooding, with many communities still struggling to repair the damage and return to normal.

However, unlike last year, flood defences have been deployed in the most at-risk areas.End of story
