One person was killed in the fatal police chase
One person has died and another is seriously ill in hospital after a police car chase ended with a crash in Brighton early this morning.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has launched a probe into the incident, which occurred at around 01:00 GMT this morning.
The accident took place after a police patrol car gave chase to a Mazda, containing three young males and two young females, which was seen to be driving erratically.
After refusing to stop the Mazda drove off with the patrol car in pursuit, but it crashed into a brick wall in Wilson Avenue, Brighton.
All five people in the car were taken to Royal Sussex County hospital, where one was pronounced dead. Another has been discharged.
Commissioner Tom Davies said the IPCC's investigation would be "independent and proportionate".
"My condolences go to the family and friends of the dead man," he said.
"This must have been a traumatic incident for everybody involved, including the members of the emergency services who attended."
The driver of the Mazda has been arrested by Sussex police.
