Bad weather threatens flooding

Monday, 21 Jan 2008 20:08
Motorists are being warned tonight's rain could turn into ice tomorrow
Fears of widespread flooding remain in place this evening as heavy rain and snowfall continue throughout much of the UK.

Large parts of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Lancashire are at risk, with the Met Office expecting 25mm to 50mm of rain in many areas of northern England and Northern Ireland.

It adds Monday may even see 70mm of rainfall in some areas. The Environment Agency (EA) has 15 severe flood warnings, 124 flood warnings and 176 flood watches in place.

EA chief executive Barbara Young said: "We remain on high alert following Met Office forecasts and are continuing to monitor the situation, clearing watercourses, strengthening defences and pumping out water where necessary.

"If you live in an area that is affected by the warnings and severe warnings, then precautionary measures should be taken."

A nursery and factory had to be evacuated in Huddersfield earlier today while train services from Leeds all had to be cancelled.

Heavy snow is expected for the coming days in northern England and southern Scotland, where forecasters predict 20cm of snowfall on high areas is possible.

This could have negative implications for motorists, Met Office chief forecaster Martin Young warns.

"Heavy rainfall and snow are cause for concern at the moment. However as the rain moves away overnight frost and ice will greet many on Tuesday morning, which could affect driving conditions on some roads," he said.

High pressure building up across the south is expected to create drier conditions by the weekend.End of story
