Arsenal and Chelsea are fighting over Croatian sensation Luka Modric, who is valued at around £25 million.
Perennial Chelsea reserve Steve Sidwell is close to joining Sunderland on loan with a view to a permanent deal after finding his first-team opportunities limited at Stamford Bridge.
And Black Cats manager Roy Keane will also land Stephen Hunt for around £5 million after tabling an acceptable bid for the Reading midfielder.
Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish is still tailing Everton's Scottish star James McFadden, who is likely to cost in excess of £5 million but is reportedly keen to join his former national team boss.
And Portsmouth's famous wheeler-dealer manager Harry Redknapp is keen to turn his attention back to goings-on at Fratton Park after turning down an approach from Newcastle United.
Redknapp is looking to offload Matthew Taylor with Wigan Athletic, Sunderland, Bolton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur all reportedly interested in the versatile left-sided player.
And Spurs striker Jermain Defoe could be going in the opposite direction after falling out with manager Juande Ramos.
