Toyota has announced 750 jobs could be lost at one of its UK plants this summer.

The Japanese manufacturer said the jobs could go at its Burnaston plant near Derby, following a "tough year" in 2009.

No decision has yet been reached though on whether or not the jobs will actually be lost.

The car manufacturer also announced it had been forced to recall 1.1 million cars in the US, following the discovery some models could have a fault where the accelerator pedal gets stuck.

There is speculation the recall could also be extended to models in Europe.

As a result of the fault, Toyota is no longer selling eight of its models made in the US, with some 3.8 million vehicles already recalled.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) received reports of 100 incidents, including 17 crashes and five deaths, possibly linked to the faulty pedals. At the time of the recall US transportation secretary Ray LaHood said: "This is an urgent matter.

"For everyone's sake, we strongly urge owners of these vehicles to remove mats or other obstacles that could lead to unintended acceleration."

In a statement on Thursday, Toyota Manufacturing UK revealed over 700 jobs could be cut from the British workforce.

"During a meeting with our employee representatives on Monday we confirmed that we will have a headcount surplus of around 750 members from August onwards," the car manufacturer said.

"The key point of Monday's discussion was how to manage this situation in order to ensure we have a sustainable business for the long term."
