Gareth Thomas and Trevor Brennan have been called to face charges of misconduct by the organisers of the Heineken Cup after allegedly clashing with spectators during a match last weekend.
The duo, who play for French side Toulouse, apparently exchanged insults with the fans who had travelled with opposition side Ulster before Brennan climbed into the crowd and assaulted one individual.
The former Irish international claimed that the attack, which left the fan involved requiring medical treatment for a suspected fractured skull, was provoked by abuse he received as he was warming up with fellow substitutes.
As Wales skipper, any ban for Thomas could see him miss out on part of the Six Nations Championships, which begin next weekend.
The ex-Cardiff winger has been accused of "aggressively attempting to enter one of the seating areas" and "making an offensive hand gesture towards supporters".
The European Rugby Cup, who run the competition, announced that they will also investigate the two teams' involvement in the incident - with Ulster's control over their support and Toulouse's over their players called into question.
The disciplinary hearings for the two players will take place as soon as possible after the ERC's Roger O'Connor has finished collecting initial evidence.
