Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has put pen to paper on an improved contract at Anfield and could now stay at the club for the next five years.
The Spanish international already had four years still to run on a six-year contract, but his new deal now gives the club the option to keep him for an extra year at the end of the 2012/13 season.
The Reds will no doubt be keen to keep Torres at the club for the next five years, especially if he continues to perform the way he has in his first two seasons at Liverpool. The 25-year-old has struck 50 goals in his first two seasons in England.
"Fernando is one of the best strikers in the game today and, at his age, can only get better," Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez told the club website.
"Every major side would want him in their team, but he has shown how much he wants to achieve success at Liverpool by committing his future to the club. He's a special talent, but still has the hunger to improve his game."
Torres follows in the footsteps of key players like Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt, Daniel Agger and Benitez himself in singing long-term contracts at the club.
"We are building something special here and securing such important players on long-term deals means we can move forward with confidence," added Benitez."This sends out a very positive message to everyone connected with the club."
