Jaime Alguersuari will drive for Toro Rosso in 2010 alongside his 2009 team-mate Sebatien Buemi.
The announcement comes after weeks of uncertainty and confusion surrounding the young Spaniard's future in formula one, following the omission of his name in the FIA's provisional entry list.
Other Red Bull Junior drivers, including Mirko Bortolotti, Daniel Ricciardo and Brendon Hartley, were linked to a possible promotion to F1 in place of Alguersuari, who stepped into the void left by Sebastien Bourdais at Toro Rosso from the Hungarian grand prix onwards when the Frenchman was sacked by team boss Franz Tost for underperforming.
In a statement, Tost said: "Considering that he made his debut only halfway through 2009 at the Hungarian grand prix with no prior testing, he did a good job, making steady progress throughout the second half of the year with a mature approach considering he is still only 19 years old.
"This season, he will again face a steep learning curve as all the circuits in the first part of the season will be new to him.
"Jaime's appointment also confirms our team's commitment to bringing on graduates of the Red Bull young driver programme."
