Titanic director James Cameron has sunk to new depths in his latest film - a three dimensional documentary which sheds new light on the sea creatures which live miles below the ocean's surface.

Swapping the decks of the Titanic for the depths of the ocean, Cameron's latest project, "Aliens of the Deep" uses the latest 3D technology to give viewers the feeling that they can almost reach out and touch the extraordinary creatures which lurk at the bottom of the sea and which are rarely seen by humans.

The film, which opens in IMAX theatres on January 28, saw the director and his team accompanied to the darkest depths of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans by a number of scientists, including experts from the NASA space agency.

Cameron, says the ground-breaking 3D technology could eventually be used by scientists to document their explorations into space.

The filmmaker also predicts that 3D movies shot in a digital format will become commonplace in local cinemas in the future, saving movie fans the hassle of "having to drive hundreds of miles to an IMAX theatre."

Commenting on the decision to turn his back on traditional two-dimensional film making, Cameron told the Reuters news agency: "If I never touch film again, I'd be happy."

"If I had the cameras I'm using now when I was shooting 'Titanic,' I would have shot 'Titanic' using them," he added.
