Tim Burton's new version of Alice in Wonderland has retained the number one spot at the US box office for a second week, with Iraq drama Green Zone making a disappointing debut.
Alice in Wonderland had made a record-breaking debut for a 3D film last week and continued to attract audiences as it grossed $62 million (£41 million) in its second week on release.
The Lewis Carroll adaptation is now Disney highest-grossing film in the US for a first-quarter release, Variety reports, and one of the studio's top 20 most successful films ever.
"In the world of blockbusters, when [takings] don't drop 50 per cent, it means one thing: positive word of mouth," said Disney president of domestic distribution Chuck Viane. "These kind of numbers prove that everybody's coming."
Green Zone, which reunites director Paul Greengrass and actor Matt Damon after their work on the Bourne films, had a disappointing but unsurprising debut of $14.5 million (£9.6 million), given the poor box office performance of movies about the Iraq war.
Romantic comedy She's Out of My League debuted in third with $9.6 million (£6.3 million) while there were also new entries for Robert Pattinson film Remember Me and romantic comedy Our Family Wedding.
