Tiger Woods stayed ahead of the chasing pack to be assured of a one shot advantage over the rest of the competition as the British Open heads into its last day at the Royal Liverpool course at Hoylake.
Woods carded a steady, if unspectacular, 71 which was enough to keep exclusive hold of the lead overnight, but the American will be aware of an ominous group of players lurking well within striking distance.
Sergio Garcia, Ernie Els and Chris DiMarco are in a three-way tie for second, while Jim Furyk and Angel Cabrera are a further shot behind.
Woods admitted to BBC television as he came off the course that he would need to play better tomorrow if he is to clinch the claret jug.
"I hit the ball beautifully today but I did not putt well. On the positive side I still maintain the lead," he said.
The momentum is certainly with Garcia. The young Spaniard tore around the links in the company of partner Jim Furyk to score a sublime 65.
"I think we really fed off each other. It was a good round for both of us," said the American.
Greg Owen set the early pace and remains the leading Englishman, reaching the clubhouse in 68 to register a strong eight under after three rounds.
