Liverpool are targeting a possible swap deal with Tottenham which would see Roman Pavlyuchenko move in one direction and Ryan Babel move in the other.
The two players concerned are unhappy at their respective clubs and would welcome a move to kick-start their careers, in Babel's case he wants to confirm his place on the plane to South Africa with the Dutch national side.
With Rafa Benitez in the market for a striker and Redknapp always eager to secure another body or two, this deal could be one that happens in the next few weeks.
Liverpool will also release their left back Andrea Dossena in January as the player will return to Roma.
In other news, Sam Allardyce has become the latest manager to declare an interest in prolific forward Ruud van Nistelrooy; Robbie Keane will not be allowed to join Celtic on loan anytime soon; and Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has confirmed that towering target man John Carew is not for sale at any price.
There is also good and bad news for struggling Everton.
Talks are at an advanced stage to complete a deal which will see LA Galaxy striker Landon Donovan arrive at Goodison Park.
But, according to reports, in-form Louis Saha has declared that he wants to leave Merseyside following their poor start to the season. The situation is made all the more complicated due to the fact that Saha's contract is due to expire at the end of the season and he is able to sign a contract with any prospective suitors in January.
