Bolton have announced the signing of David Thompson from Portsmouth until the end of the season.
The Trotters report that a nominal fee has been exchanged for the 29-year-old.
Manager Sam Allardyce said he expected the midfielder to provide competition for places and help the team push for a European spot in the league.
"He is a tenacious battling midfielder, who has an excellent touch," Allardyce commented.
Liverpool have signed defender Alvaro Arbeloa from Deportivo La Coruna and 18-year-old midfielder Francisco Manuel Duran from Malaga.
Arbeloa has played 20 times for Deportivo this season following his move from Real Madrid last year.
He said: "For me this is a beautiful challenge and I hope everything goes well. It's a huge leap for me."
Portuguese winger Manuel Fernandes has joined Everton on a six-month loan deal from Benfica.
The 20-year-old started the season on-loan at Portsmouth but returned back to Portugal at the start of January after Harry Redknapp decided he was surplus to requirements at Pompey.
After selling Simon Davies to Fulham last week, Toffees manager David Moyes was keen to bolster his midfield.
He said: "We are pleased to add him to the squad and we look forward to seeing him in action in the months ahead."
Celtic have sealed a deal for Scottish international Paul Hartley from Hearts in a deal thought to be worth in the region of £1.1 million.
A Celtic statement said: "The player has signed a two-and-a-half year deal, with Celtic having the option of a further year."
