Captain John Terry has backed Jose Mourinho as the outstanding candidate in the running for the vacant England manager's job.
Mourinho, who build up a close relationship with Terry during his three years as Chelsea boss, has let it be known that he is interested in becoming Steve McClaren's successor and built up a head of popular support.
"He is one that really stands out for me. Now it is down to the FA to contact him if they want to speak to him," Terry said.
"Jose came in and took us to a new level at Chelsea. I am very lucky to have worked with Jose - he is a fantastic manager and a fantastic guy.
"He could make a big difference. He's a great guy, tactically he is very aware, and he understands the game very well."
Terry is one of a number of footballing figures to be consulted by the FA over their next move after failing to qualify for the Euro 2008 finals.
Uefa president Michel Platini, German FA chief Franz Beckenbauer and Premier League managers Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger have all been asked their opinions on how to rebuild English football and Terry admits his own discussion took in a range of topics.
"I've had a meeting with Brian Barwick [FA chairman], but that will stay private between me and him. Not just about managers, it's about many things," the defender said.
