Manchester United beat Tottenham 3 - 1 at White Hart Lane, despite being reduced to 10-men in the second-half. Jermain Defoe continued his spectacular start to the season when he smashed a bicycle kick past Ben Foster in the first minute. However Manchester United equalised through Ryan Giggs' curling free kick before Anderson scored his first goal in 76 appearances to put Sir Alex Ferguson's team into the lead. Paul Scholes was dismissed for two bookable offences with half an hour remaining, but the Premier League champions secured the win through Rooney's excellent goal on the break. Ferguson welcomed backed Rio Ferdinand for his first game of the season, and named veterans Scholes and Giggs in midfield with former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov up front. Peter Crouch started in place of the injured Luka Modric with Robbie Keane moving to the left of midfield. Ledley King started alongside Sebastien Bassong in defence whilst England's Aaron Lennon started on the right-wing after his impressive display against Croatia in midweek. Spurs made a flying start with Jermain Defoe scoring after 50 seconds. Crouch rose well to beat Nemanja Vidic and head the ball down for Defoe to hit an overhead kick past Ben Foster. Darren Fletcher had a chance to respond almost immediately but his low shot was turned round the post by Carlo Cudicini. United struggled to settle into the game as Wilson Palacios harried Scholes and Anderson in midfield and Crouch continued to cause problems for Vidic, testing Foster with two volleys early on. Ryan Giggs came to the rescue though with an excellent free kick from the right after Palacios was cautioned for his two footed challenge on Berbatov. Rooney shaped to shoot but it was the Welshman who took charge and curled the ball into the top corner from 20 yards to maintain his record of scoring in every Premier League season. And United should have taken the lead moments later when Patrice Evra stole the ball from Lennon and burst down the left. The Frenchman found Rooney in the box but his shot was saved by Cudicini. The rebound fell to Berbatov but his shot was cleared off the line by Bassong before the Bulgarian hit his second chance harmlessly over the bar. Tottenham threatened to regain the lead through Crouch's header from Tom Huddlestone's corner but it was Ferguson's team who took the lead with five minutes to half-time. Fletcher took a poor corner which was cleared by Crouch at the front post, however Scholes smashed the ball back towards goal and when the ball fell to Anderson on the edge of the box, the Brazilian swept the ball into the bottom right hand corner to score his first league goal for Manchester United. Jermaine Jenas replaced Palacios at half-time and almost equalised for Harry Redknapp's team when he rifled a shot at goal which Foster managed to turn around the post with a finger-tip save. Crouch rose well as the resulting corner was played in but his header came off the top of the bar. With 30 minutes left to play and United looking to be in control, Scholes was sent-off for a needless challenge on Huddlestone after receiving his first yellow card only minutes earlier for a late challenge on Defoe. Ferguson replaced Berbatov with another former Spurs player - Michael Carrick - as he attempted to consolidate the midfield with his team down to 10 men. Spurs began to dominate possession but Rooney forced a good save from Cudicini after a quick break down the left. Crouch continued to battle with Vidic, but when Huddlestone struck a poor free kick straight at Foster, the United keeper launched a devastating counter attack. Fletcher picked the ball up and threaded a pass through to Rooney who cut inside Alan Hutton before slipping the ball through Cudicini's legs to secure the win for the Premier League champions.
