Queen launches YouTube channel

Sunday, 23 Dec 2007 12:28
Queen sets up own channel on video-sharing website YouTube.
The Queen has set up her own dedicated channel on video-sharing website YouTube.

Her Christmas Day message will be posted on the site for the first time after the Royal Channel went live at 00:00 GMT.

Emblazoned with a scarlet heading, "The Royal Channel - The Official Channel Of The British Monarchy", the page features both archive and recent footage of the Queen and other members of the Royal Family.

It is illustrated with a picture of Buckingham Palace flanked by guardsmen clad in traditional bearskin hats and red tunics and includes modern-day clips of state visits and garden parties.

The Royal Channel also includes a video feature on a day in the life of the Prince of Wales.

This year's Christmas message will appear on the site at around 15:00, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the monarch's first televised speech, which she delivered on December 25th, 1957.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: "The Queen always keeps abreast with new ways of communicating with people. The Christmas message was podcast last year. The Royal Channel features the 1957 broadcast where she talks about using a new medium of communication."

"She has always been aware of reaching more people and adapting the communication to suit. This will make the Christmas Message more accessible to younger people and those in other countries."

The Queen's annual festive speech can again be downloaded as a podcast from www.royal.gov.uk.End of story
