The average broadband user spends the equivalent of one day every week using the internet, according to a new survey.
There are ten million people signed up to high-speed internet services in the UK, and price comparison website uSwitch, claims that the average user surfs the web for 23 hours and 30 minutes every week, amounting to 50 days a year.
The firm's analysts also report that internet markets such as online shopping and banking have enjoyed "explosive" growth in consumer use.
Broadband-enabled Britons devote one hour and 53 minutes entirely for shopping online every week, with 87 per cent of users regularly making the internet their first port of call for goods and products, while four out of five users have signed up to online banking services.
Today's survey also reveals that 44 per cent of women are playing games on the internet, compared to just over one-third of men. In total, broadband internet users spend four hours and 40 minutes on internet games in one week alone.
Chris Williams, broadband product manager at uSwitch, said it was "very exciting" to see that so many people were taking advantage of the benefits of high-speed broadband connections.
"The flexibility of the internet means it's the perfect place for multitasking, having fun and generally getting things done. The uptake of broadband in the past eighteen months has been nothing short of explosive and this will certainly continue, especially with the constant innovation in the market," he explained.
