Bebo overcomes rivals Facebook and MySpace to be named best social networking site by an independent consumer report.
Bebo has overcome its rivals Facebook and MySpace to be named the best social networking site by an independent consumer report.

According to Computing Which? magazine, which carried out the study, the site - aimed at 13-24-year-olds - encourages "responsible networking" which allows users to protect their privacy and security.

Bebo received an overall score of 79 per cent - with its closest rival Facebook scoring 74 per cent - and was praised for allowing users to control the accessibility of their personal pages.

"Users can restrict who sees their information and block users, and there's plenty of advice on security risks and how to avoid these," the magazine said.

While Facebook - which around 6.5 million Britons logged on to in August, according to recent figures - was praised for the simplicity of its design, it lost votes for potential confusing security settings.

MySpace, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News International and the breeding ground for musical talents such as Lily Allen and the Arctic Monkeys, scored 67 per cent overall while Microsoft's Windows Live Spaces took an overall score of 65 per cent.

The seemingly unsophisticated Yahoo! Groups received the lowest score of the ten sites surveyed, with 59 per cent.

Abigail Waraker, the editor of Computing Which?, commented: "Social networking sites are growing in popularity and, as the success of Bebo in our test shows, sites like MySpace and Facebook can't rest on their laurels if they want to stay in the game.

"It's also encouraging to see that no matter what age you are or what interests you have, there is a social networking site out there for you."

A survey published last year by media regulator Ofcom found that Britons spend more time on social networking sites than any other nation in Europe, devoting 5.3 hours per month to sites such as Bebo, Facebook and MySpace.End of story
