The director Roman Polanski's request to be freed after being arrested on a 31-year-old warrant has been rejected by Swiss authorities.
The Chinatown helmer was arrested at the Zurich Film Festival last month over his 1977 conviction for sex with an underage girl, after which he fled the US.
According to the Associated Press news agency, the Swiss Justice Ministry says it has rejected an appeal from the 76-year-old to be released from prison pending a potential extradition to the US.
Polanski's legal team have also filed an appeal for the director's release with the Swiss courts.
Polanski pleaded guilty in 1977 to having sex with 13-year-old Samantha Geimer but fled the country before sentencing and now lives in Paris, which has limited extradition with the US.
He was arrested last month at the Zurich film festival, where he was due to receive a lifetime achievement award.
