In the last week a further 100,000 people have succumbed to the swine flu virus, it was revealed on Thursday.
Official figures from the government said 840 people were "seriously ill" in hospital, with 63 of them in intensive care.
Twelve of those in intensive care are under-five, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) said as the government launched its national flu pandemic service.

The government's chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson told journalists today that the H1N1 virus was proving both 'unpredictable and inexplicable'.
But he highlighted the fact that since the HPA's last update one week ago, the national death-toll remained unchanged at 31.
"The majority of cases continue to be mild," an HPA statement said.
