A post-mortem examination has established that singer Stephen Gately died of natural causes, it has been announced.
The Boyzone member was found dead while holidaying in Majorca at the weekend, aged 33.
Gately died after a pulmonary oedema, namely an accumulation of fluid in the lungs, according to a report from the local coroner.
Police had said after the discovery of Gately's body on Saturday afternoon that there were "no sign of suspicious circumstances".
It had been reported earlier this week that Gately died after a drinking "binge" while in Majorca with his partner Andrew Cowles but the tabloid claims had been denied by the singer's family.
"We are not saying he was not drinking but eight hours is not something we accept," said the Gately family's lawyer Gerald Kean.
A Spanish court official said the pulmonary oedema experienced by Gately had been "acute" and added that while she could not say if he had taken drugs or alcohol prior to his death, neither were the cause of death.
The official declined to comment whether the singer had vomited before his death.
Papers have now been signed approving the release of Gately's body to his family and partner, allowing the late singer to be flown home to Ireland.
"The family's only wish is to get their son and brother home as soon as possible," Mr Kean added.
