Tottenham Hotspur reached the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup as Sunderland fell on penalties and Stoke City were humbled by Portsmouth.
Goals from Tom Huddlestone and Robbie Keane sent Spurs through to the last eight, as the White Hart Lane side brushed aside Everton to strengthen their chances of a third consecutive Carling Cup final.
Aston Villa booked their quarter-final place after defeating Sunderland 3-1 on penalties, with reserve goalkeeper Brad Guzan saving three spot-kicks and coming in for huge praise from Villa manager Martin O'Neill.
"He gave a fantastic performance and we are naturally delighted to have got through [to the last eight]," O'Neill said.
"He has been doing it for some time, I think he is a great keeper in the making. He has got everything and he is as brave as they come."
Guzan had also saved a tame Kenwyne Jones spot-kick in normal time while Kieran Richardson missed a fine chance for Sunderland in normal time.
Premier League strugglers Portsmouth appeared a different side as they strolled into the quarter-finals with a 4-0 home win over Stoke.
On-loan striker Frederic Piquionne opened the scoring on 17 minutes, adding a second just before the hour, with Danny Webber and Nwankwo Kanu also finding the net.
And with Manchester United easing into the last-eight with a 2-0 defeat of Barnsley, Blackburn Rovers ensured Premier League sides coped with lower league opposition on Tuesday night by beating Peterborough United.
Despite a recent outbreak of swine flu among the Blackburn squad, Sam Allardyce's men reached the quarter finals with a 5-2 home win, with Morten Gamst Pedersen, Steven Reid, Michel Salgado, Benni McCarthy and Nikola Kalinic finding the net for the home side at Ewood Park.
Arsenal meet Liverpool in the Carling Cup on Wednesday, with Chelsea taking on Bolton and Manchester City welcoming Scunthorpe to Eastlands.
