Sunderland have agreed an undisclosed fee with Tottenham Hotspur to sign midfielder Teemu Tainio.
The Finnish international was one of four Spurs players to be linked with a move to the Stadium of Light but is the first to sign, having completed his medical on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old has signed a three-year-deal with Roy Keane's side and is expected to play in the centre of midfield.
Keane was pleased to have secured the signature of a player with significant Premier League and international experience.
He said: "I'm delighted to sign a player of Teemu's experience and quality, he'll be a valuable addition to our squad.
"Teemu has showed versatility, playing in different midfield positions for both Tottenham and his previous club Auxerre.
"But his experience in particular and the fact he has played more than 40 international games shows he has a lot to offer Sunderland."
Tainio joined Spurs in 2005 on a free transfer from French side Auxerre. He made 85 appearances for the north London club and scored three times.
Keane will hopes to conclude deals for Tottenham trio Pascal Chimbonda, Younes Kaboul and Steed Malbranque in the coming days after Spurs reportedly accepted a £23 million package deal for all four players.
Chimbonda would seem closest to a move after holding talks with Keane over the weekend, while Kaboul's agent has claimed the defender is currently considering the Black Cats' offer.
