An emotional Andy Murray praised "incredible" Roger Federer before tearfully cutting short his runner-up speech after his Australian Open final defeat.
The Scot was no match for Federer during the first two sets which he conceded 6-3, 6-4. But he won the hearts of the Melbourne crowd for the quality of his play in the third set, earning five set points before losing the tiebreak, and with it the match, 13-11.
Watched by his mother Judy and his support team, he told the spectators in the Rod Laver Arena: "Firstly congratulations Roger. His achievements in tennis are incredible.
"He was a lot better than me tonight, so well done. Thank you for your support. I loved every minute of it, and hopefully one time I can come back and win here."
Blowing hard, he struggled to continue before saying: "Sorry I couldn't do it for you tonight... oh no, more tears... I can cry like Roger. It's just a shame I can't play like him."
As he was about to thank his support team, the occasion became too much for him and he said: "Sorry, I'm done."
It was the 22-year-old's second appearance in the final of a Grand Slam; Federer also beat him in straight sets at the climax of the 2008 US Open.
