Wakefield Wildcats forward Terry Newton has been suspended by the UK Anti-Doping Agency for failing a random drugs test.
The Super League club have released a short statement confirming the positive test, which happened last November.
"Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have confirmed that Terry Newton has been provisionally suspended by the UK Anti-Doping Agency after testing positive for a prohibited substance on November 24th 2009," he said.
"Neither Wakefield Trinity Wildcats nor Terry Newton will be making any further comment on the issue until further notice."
It is not clear what substance Newton, a former Great Britain and England international, tested positive for.
However, the 31-year-old will now be out of action until a ruling is handed down on his eligibility or a secondary test confirms the presence of the banned substance.
