St Helens scrum-half Sean Long, 33, has been told by the Rugby Football League to elaborate on accusations made within his autobiography.

Long's controversial book "Booze, Brawls, Sex and Scandal" has whipped up a storm by claiming his St Helens and former Bradford Bulls team-mates regularly get other people to place bets on their behalf.

Adding to the accusations published in his book, Long has been quoted as saying that Super League players continue to bet on the game.

"They just get someone else to put it on for them," he said.

"Why not? It makes the game more interesting. It's not like you've got inside information, like me and Glees did. It's like betting on football and saying 'I'll have £10 on Rooney to score'."

Craig Spence, the RFL's communications manager, said: "We will be looking to sit down with Sean Long in the next few weeks and interview him regarding these comments.

"If someone makes accusations that betting is rife in the game, he has to give us those names. If not, he could face a misconduct charge from the RFL."

The England international who is set to join Hull after Saturday's Grand Final against Leeds, was himself banned from the sport in 2004, along with former team-mate Martin Gleeson, after the pair were found guilty of betting on Saints to lose a match at Bradford.
