Six members of the Huddersfield Giants rugby league squad are being questioned by police over allegations of rape made by an unnamed woman in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Newcastle police received a formal complaint from a 22-year-old female and the force have confirmed six individuals have been arrested in connection with their enquiries.
In a statement published on the club's official website, Huddersfield Giants managing director Richard Thewlis said: "I can confirm that six of our playing squad are currently helping police with their enquiries in the Newcastle area regarding an allegation made in the early hours of Tuesday morning by an unnamed female.
"The club has fully co-operated with all requests made of us by the police and we are now awaiting further information from them."
The squad were staying in the Gosforth area of Newcastle on a preseason training camp, although they have since returned to West Yorkshire.
Thewlis has travelled back to the north east to conduct an internal enquiry over the circumstances surrounding the allegations and the club have refused to comment further.
