England's David Howell took the lead on the second day of the BMW Championship at Wentworth after advancing to 11 under par.
On a blustery and rainy day full of difficult playing conditions the Englishman shot a magnificent seven under par 65 to storm ahead in a round which included eight bogies and only one dropped shot.
As the tournament heads into what promises to be a fascinating weekend Howell faces a tight pack of competition behind him, headed by Nick Dougherty who remained the clubhouse leader during the later stages of this afternoon.
He had shot a three under par 69 to extend his overnight lead, but saw it evaporate as Howell moved past him in the evening light.
The moment of the day came early on, however, when Luke Donald aced the second to take a quick lead. Unfortunately a series of dropped shots, including a double bogey six on the 15th, saw him drop back to a share of sixth place at five under.
With Simon Khan on six under and Paul Casey on five under the presence of English players on the leaderboard is impressive, but with Argentina's Angel Cabrera playing solidly on seven under par and Robert Karlsson of Sweden on six under there is no guarantee that an Englishman will win this tournament just yet.
