Legendary racer Sir Stirling Moss has broken both his ankles after falling three stories down a lift shaft at his home in Mayfair, London on Saturday.
The ex-formula one driver, who is affectionately regarded by many as the best driver to have never won the world championship, was rushed to the Royal London Hospital on Saturday evening, after a lift malfunction led to the accident.
The 80-year-old suffered two broken ankles, four broken bones to his foot, skin aberrations and four chipped vertebrae, but is said to be comfortable in hospital, after undergoing surgery on his ankles.
A statement on his official website read: "The door to the lift, that should have remained locked if the lift was not on the floor that it was called from, opened in error.
"He (Sir Stirling) stepped into the narrow open shaft in the expectation that the lift would be present for him to walk into, as it should have been."
In the statement his wife Lady Moss said: "This was a very unfortunate accident; it could have just as easily been another member of the family stepping into where the lift should have been."
Sir Stirling is expected to remain in hospital for six weeks, while he recovers from his injuries.
