With injuries piling up, it seems Manchester City are becoming increasingly desperate to add to their options up front.
Valeri Bojinov broke down in the warm-up ahead of Sunday's match against Aston Villa, meaning City boss Mark Hughes was forced to select Ched Evans for his Premier League debut in attack.
And the ex-Blackburn boss has admitted that a goalscorer is his top priority before the end of August, with former charge Roque Santa Cruz continuing to be linked with Ewood Park.
Rumours suggest Hughes may also be tempted to step in for wantaway Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov, who is keen to leave north London.
However, the Bulgarian seems to already have his sights set on a switch to Premier League champions Manchester United who are similarly short of forwards.
One player who could be set for a move to Rovers is Real Madrid's Javier Saviola, who is being linked to a number of English clubs including Newcastle United - where he could join Argentinean countryman Fabricio Coloccini.
Elsewhere, Harry Redknapp is stepping up his pursuit of Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips, who has slipped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
The Portsmouth boss is keen to bring Wright-Phillips to Fratton Park in a move that would give the diminutive winger regular first-team football and bolster his claims for an England call-up.
And finally, Chelsea are still looking to add to their squad before the end of the transfer window.
Brazilians Robinho and Kaka are both continuing to be linked with the Blues, who are now managed by countryman Luiz Felipe Scolari, although there remains significant disagreement over the asking prices for the two.
