Manchester City may have missed out on signing one highly-rated playmaker, but that has not stopped the big spenders from immediately beginning their pursuit of another.
AC Milan star Kaka has turned down a world record salary from City to stay in Italy, meaning he will not be making what had been rumoured to be a £100m-plus switch to Eastlands.
However, the club are rumoured to now be on the trail of another link man - £15 million-rated Andrei Arshavin from Zenit St Petersburg.
The Russian is already in talks with Arsenal, and Zenit boss Dick Advocaat is confident a move to England will be finalised.
But no one is ruling out a last-ditch change of heart from the Russian international if City come a-knocking with a big-money contract in hand.
Elsewhere, West Ham United boss Gianfranco Zola is set to dip his toe in the transfer market to spend some of the £14 million garnered from selling Craig Bellamy to City yesterday.
Atop the Italian's wish list is Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner, who is apparently being touted around by Arsene Wenger for a January transfer.
