Ghana's captain could finally be set for a move to a Premier League club after years of transfer rumours.
Stephen Appiah will almost certainly be playing top flight football in England before the transfer window closes if reports he has quit Turkish outfit Fenerbahce are true.
The midfielder, who has spent the past nine months on the treatment table, has reportedly fallen out with the club's management.
The 27-year-old former Juventus star's availability will alert the likes of Portsmouth - who lost Appiah's Ghana team-mate Sulley Muntari to Inter Milan this summer - as well as Newcastle and Everton.
But the Toffees have not given up on their main target this summer, Sporting Lisbon playmaker Joao Moutinho.
And despite the sale of Muntari and Pedro Mendes, Pompey manager Harry Redknapp is not concerned about central midfield reinforcements.
But after complaining of a lack of pace following his side's 4-0 opening day defeat to Chelsea, Redknapp is likely to step up moves for Tottenham Hotspur winger Aaron Lennon and Newcastle's James Milner.
Spurs are still being linked with Zenit St Petersburg's Andrei Arshavin, despite reports over the weekend claiming the deal was dead in the water.
Dimitar Berbatov's future remains similarly unresolved, with the striker hoping his club can agree a price with Manchester United.
Elsewhere in the Premier League West Brom are eyeing a double swoop for Real Mallorca's Borja Valero and Charlton's Zheng Zhi, while AC Milan are still interested in Chelsea's out-of-favour defender Branislav Ivanovic.
