Tottenham Hotspur are looking to kick off their close season transfer chase with a big-money move for a top Premiership striker.
Spurs boss Martin Jol is eyeing up Blackburn forward Benni McCarthy as a potential partner for star man Dimitar Berbatov next season, which will give the north London side a range of options up front along with Robbie Keane.
The White Hart Lane outfit may face competition from Manchester United for McCarthy however, and Spurs' £6 million bid is well short of Mark Hughes' valuation.
If Sir Alex Ferguson misses out on McCarthy however, he may be tempted to look at Spurs' Jermaine Defoe to boost his options in attack.
Spurs are also rumoured to be going head-to-head with Aston Villa for Ajax's Dutch star Wesley Sneijder.
Liverpool are another team looking to splash out on some foreign stars with France international Florent Malouda, but Arsenal are trying to hijack the Reds' £10 million bid.
Fulham's wantaway striker Collins John could be set to join Manchester City-bound Marlon Harewood at Eastlands, although Middlesbrough could also be launching a bid for the West Ham United forward.
Finally Bolton's Tal Ben Haim could be heading for a reunion with former boss Sam Allardyce at Newcastle.
The St James' Park outfit are looking to capitalise on the Israeli's contract situation as his existing deal is about to expire, leaving him available on a free transfer.
