Sir Alex Ferguson is set to continue his summer spending spree by prising striker Eidur Gudjohnsen from Barcelona.
The Icelander has endured a frustrating season at the Catalan giants after surprisingly being allowed to leave Chelsea last summer.
Despite the similarities in his game to fellow deep-lying forward Wayne Rooney, Ferguson is a long-time admirer of the 28-year-old.
But the Old Trafford boss may have to pay a heavy price to get his man, with Barca wanting to trade Gudjohnsen for United's promising centre-back Gerard Pique, who spent the last season on loan at Real Zaragoza who themselves want to make the youngster's deal permanent in a £7 million transfer.
Another striker not on his way out of the Nou Camp is Samuel Eto'o, who has been perennially linked with a move to the Premiership since reportedly falling out with manager Frank Rijkaard earlier this season.
However, Barca's £25 million asking price is proving too expensive for both Liverpool and Arsenal, meaning the only way the Cameroonian will get to play alongside Thierry Henry is if the Gunners legend swaps north London for Catalonia.
With their attempts to sign Darren Bent finally scuppered, West Ham will renew their interest in Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips.
The England fringe player is among those at Stamford Bridge Jose Mourinho would be willing to lose if the right offer came on.
Attacking lynchpin Didier Drogba does not fall into this category though, with AC Milan told they have no chance of signing the Ivorian.
At Bolton meanwhile, Sammy Lee will continue his rebuilding job by telling fan favourites Jussi Jaaskelainen and Stelios Giannakopoulos that they can leave the Reebok.
