Newcastle United have signed Papiss Demba Cisse from Bundesliga side Freiburg for an undisclosed fee.

The Sengeal striker agreed to the move before flying out to join up with his national side at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he will join his new clubmate Demba Ba.

Cisse, 26, has scored nine goals in 15 league games this season and has been given the number nine shirt at his new side. He said that signing for Newcastle is "an honour".

"I want to pay back the confidence the club have shown in me and give the supporters something to be proud of," he added.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew admitted that Cisse has been a target ever since Andy Carroll left for Liverpool last January in a £35 million move. It is thought that the club paid around £10 million for the player, £4 million less than he was valued at last summer.

His new club are sixth in the Premier League after an impressive start to the season.
