Former England defender Sol Campbell has walked out on Notts County after only one game in League Two.
Campbell made his long-awaited debut in the club's defeat to Morecambe at the weekend, but struggled to make an impact as Ian McParland's side slid to their third consecutive away defeat.
It has been suggested that one of the reasons behind Campbell's departure is due to the player harbouring ambitions to play for England at the 2010 World Cup.
The executive chairman of Notts County, Peter Trembling, said: "While we are disappointed that Sol felt he could not adjust to the long-term nature of the project underway at Notts County, we obviously wish him the best with the remainder of his career and hope that he is able to obtain a place where he can play at international level ahead of the 2010 World Cup."
Following the Morecambe game it is understood that Campbell asked to be released from his five-year contract, worth an estimated £10 million, saying that his new side were guilty of hesitating in possession.
The news comes as the Football League has confirmed that they are looking into the club's takeover by the Middle East consortium, Munto Finance.
Trembling said of the current situation surrounding the club and the takeover: "The investment project is on track; we've brought in a lot of new players and resources to the club, but obviously this is a five-year project not a five-week one."
The league's governing body is yet to rubber-stamp the takeover as mystery continues to surround the club's new owners.
"We have received fit and proper persons documentation. Discussions are ongoing with regard to the club's ownership structure," said a Football League spokesman.
