Roberto Ayala is on his way from Valencia and could be heading for Anfield, according to reports.

The Argentina defender's agent confirmed today that Ayala is on the brink of agreeing a free transfer with an unnamed club after the Spanish side failed to offer him a new contract.

Gustavo Mascardi told Radio Valencia SER: "We have nearly reached an agreement with another club for next season, only a few details are outstanding.

"If nothing changes before the 4th or 5th of February we will sign the definitive document," he added.

And, while Villarreal are thought to be in pole position for the signature of the ageing centre-back, it emerged today Liverpool could also be in the running.

Former Valencia boss Rafa Benitez is known to be an admirer of his ex-player and with his contract set to expire he could be a useful addition to the Liverpool squad.
